Wednesday reversed Tuesday's drift with weight behind it. Turnover was little changed at 697m against 682m, but the mix turned decisively - 487m traded in advancing names against 188m in declining ones - and breadth swung to 275 advancers against 138 decliners with 27 unchanged. For the first time in the run the volume board and the index's engines pointed the same way: BOP turned 40m at 3.1%, HBL 11m at 4.9% and BAFL 11m at 0.5%, putting three banks among the heaviest prints of the session, while MLCF traded 14m at 2.1% and PRL 22m at 1.5%. WTL topped the volume board at 43m and 2.5% and CNERGY turned 40m at 0.5%. The speculative complex kept unwinding rather than leading - TSBL fell 5% on 53m, a third session of two-way trade after Monday's 2.7% loss and Tuesday's 3.6% gain, and TPLP eased 1.1% on 25m - with UNITY's 10% on 27m the fringe's one clean advance.
Sector micro-analysis
Twenty-three of 32 sectors closed higher and the leadership sat where it counts. Fertilizer led at 2.08% with all five names up, Textile Weaving matched it at 2.06% with five up and none down, and Commercial Banks followed at 1.95% with 17 advancers to a single decliner - HBL 4.9%, AKBL 3.4%, BOP 3.1%, MEBL 3.0% and NBP 1.8%. Cement rose 1.34% with 16 of 18 higher on DGKC and FCCL at 2.3% and MLCF at 2.1%, the E&Ps added 0.82% with all four up and the Refinery sector 0.58%, also with all four higher, recovering Tuesday's clean sweep lower. The one heavyweight group to fall was Oil and Gas Marketing at -0.67% with two up and seven down, an exact inversion of Tuesday, when it rose 1.5% with all nine names higher. Apparel led the decliners at -1.31%, giving back Tuesday's 2.29%, and Modarabas rose 0.42% despite 13 of 19 names closing lower.

Foreign investors were net buyers of PKR 772m (USD 2.8m); local investors were net sellers of PKR 772m. the internals read as the heavyweight bid returning with conviction rather than another rotation. Up-volume of 487m ran more than two and a half times the 188m in declining names on a 697m tape, breadth widened to 275 against 138, and the KSE-30's 1.87% outpaced both the KSE-100's 1.66% and the All-Share's 1.30% - the second heavyweight-led session in three, and this one with the volume board behind it. Bank turnover was the change: BOP's 40m, HBL's 11m and BAFL's 11m put three banks among the session's heaviest prints, where a week ago the sector's leading name traded a tenth of that. The fringe, meanwhile, sold off into the advance - TSBL fell 5% on 53m and TPLP 1.1% on 25m - the mirror image of the periphery-led sessions that carried late July.
Outlook
- •The index cleared a level it had not closed above since 10 July: Wednesday's 1.66% rise to 180,015 more than recovered Tuesday's 0.63% slip and cut the gap to the 6 July record of 187,455 to about 3.97%.
- •The advance came from the index's engines rather than around them - Commercial Banks rose 1.95% with 17 of 18 names up, Cement 1.34% with 16 of 18, and the KSE-30's 1.87% led the KSE-100 and the All-Share both.
- •The volume mix confirmed the move: 487m traded in advancing names against 188m in declining ones, with three banks among the heaviest prints of the session and the speculative complex selling off into the rally.
What to watch
- •Whether the 180,000 level holds on a retest - Wednesday's 180,015 close cleared it by 15 points and is the first finish above it since 10 July
- •Whether bank participation persists - BOP traded 40m, HBL 11m at 4.9% and BAFL 11m, putting three banks among the session's heaviest prints for the first time in the run
- •Whether Oil and Gas Marketing steadies after inverting Tuesday's sweep - the sector went from all nine names up to seven of nine down in a single session
- •USD/PKR, SBP rate signals and the global crude tape
